Since 1974, Nags Head Woods Ecological Preserve has been dedicated as a National Natural Landmark, and is a 1,400 acre conservation area on the sound side in Nags Head. With five miles of trails, this area is a wonderful place to walk, jog, or hike to enjoy the diverse, local ecosystem and over 50 species of plants, animals, and birds. Explore ponds, wooded areas, dunes, and marsh on the Center Trail, Sweetgum Swamp Trail, Blueberry Ridge Trail, Discovery Trail, or Roanoke Sound trail that leads to the water’s edge. There is also an ADA trail that is handicap accessible, with two handicap parking spots at the trailhead.
